The Style of Your Shingles

The architectural integrity of every building relies on a strong foundation and a well-built roof. In terms of your home’s longevity and efficiency, a new roof is likely to be the most important purchase you’ll ever make. Nothing shields you from the elements as well and no other single structure has as dramatic of an effect on your home’s comfort and energy efficiency.

Most homes that are more than 10 or 15 years old have roofs topped off with 3-tab asphalt shingles. They’re still available, and still do a fine job, but you have many other options today. The styles of asphalt shingles that we offer from GAF, the #1 manufacturer in North America, include architectural, architectural specialty, premium designer, and 3-tab shingles. Learn more about each different type of shingle below to determine which is best for you and your home.

Architectural Shingles

Architectural shingles have become a homeowner favorite because they blend the affordable durability of asphalt shingles with the look of real wood shake shingles. Color, size and shape variations among the tabs result in a more “dimensional” look that has become popular.

Architectural Specialty Shingles

Specialty Shingles give you an architectural shingle profile that looks just like wood shake shingles with a couple of different options. The Timberline® Cool Series reflects sunlight to help reduce attic heat build-up and save energy in the hot summer months. Timberline® ArmorShield™ II Roofing offers Class IV impact resistance to guard against storms. They’re so strong, you may even save on homeowners insurance!

Premium Designer Shingles

Designer styles make it easy to give your roof the appearance of real slate, dramatic, handcrafted wood shakes, hand-cut European shingles, clay tile and more. Choose from 10 distinctive profiles, each available in a wide range of colors, to give your home the perfect finishing touch.

3-Tab Shingles

You have two different options when it comes to 3-Tab Shingles. Marquis WeatherMax® shingles are designed for homeowners who demand superior performance, classic detailing and the traditional appeal of a basic, 3-tab shingle. Royal Sovereign® shingles offer simple, timeless beauty and GAF’s Advanced Protection™ technology, making it GAF’s most popular 3-tab shingle. Both options are available in many colors, too.

At Tri-State Home Improvement, quality defines value which is why we exclusively feature GAF roofing products – the #1 selling brand in North America. See the Tri-State difference for yourself and book a free, no-obligation home estimate for your home improvement needs!

How to clean siding

When it’s time to replace your Windows, Siding and Roofing

If you’ve asked yourself, “Is it time to replace my windows/siding/roofing?,” Chances are, it’s time. The good thing about replacing any of these items is that your home will most likely increase in value and operate more efficiently. Replacing windows or a roof, or adding new siding provides an opportunity to make some big changes to your home’s curb appeal. If you own an older home, updating any of these elements with modern, fashionable alternatives can make your home seem almost new. Below are some tell-tale signs that your home is screaming for an upgrade.

Windows

Windows can show a lot of different signs that indicate they need replacing (in fact, we wrote a whole blog about it!). Main indications that your windows are no longer performing how they should include draftiness, condensation and whether they are difficult to open and close. Are your current windows hard to clean, or do you hear excessive noise inside? Yup. Your windows need to be replaced.

Siding

Cracked and/or rotting siding are two clear-cut clues that it’s time to upgrade. Other signs may not be as pronounced. For instance, if your energy bills have suddenly skyrocketed or if you notice moisture build-up indoors, this could be pointing to old and problematic siding.

Roof

If you know the roof on your home has not been replaced within 20 years, it’s time to seriously start the replacing process. There are other more obvious signs that you have an older, aging roof, like if your shingles are curled, cracked or missing, if moss has begun to grow or if you notice dark streaks. Homes that were built around the same time, will more often than not need to have their roofs replaced around the same time as well, so if you notice your neighbors are having new roofs installed, it’s probably time to have yours replaced, too.

Even if you’ve gone through this process before, you’re very likely to find that it can all be quite overwhelming. Homeowners have never had as many technical options related to efficiency and performance. New materials, new engineering add to the dizzying array of colors and styles.

The fastest way to narrow your choices is to ask for a little help. We’ve got selection tools that can guide you through the maze of options in terms of price, efficiency and materials. Winterize Your Garage

When the first nice day of spring or summer arrives, everyone is chomping at the bit to get outside. Whether it’s mowing the lawn, or planting the first seeds for your home garden, the adventures often start in your garage. But why only utilize that space for six months, when you can enjoy it year-round?

Take some time this winter to tidy up your garage space with our helpful tips.

1. Utilize your wall space.

Older homes usually come with smaller garages, so if you’re constantly having a rock-paper-scissors war on what can and can’t stay in the garage, it’s time to utilize your walls for some alternative storage.

Instead of investing in a pricy toolbox, get some pegboard from your local home improvement store and hang it on the walls of your garage to store everything from hammers and screwdrivers, to drills and even cleaning supplies. Not only will this free up space on your garage floor, but you’ll also spend much less time sifting through supplies or trying to remember the last place you put your pliers.

Larger items can find a home on your walls, too. Shovels, rakes, leaf blowers, etc. can reside out-of-tripping territory with the use of a mounted tool rack, with some products holding as many as 20 tools!

2. Inspect winter equipment.

Year after year your snow blower lays dormant from the last snowfall of one season to the first of the next. It’s easy to push it out of sight, out of mind when there’s no snow to be seen, but the last thing you, or your back, needs is a faulty blower during the first blizzard of the season.

When the weather turns cold, it’s a good idea to run tests on your winter tools to make sure there are no kinks. If you find any, it’s better to deal with them then, as opposed to when there’s three feet of snow sitting between you and the rest of the world. A simple search in your internet browser for “snow blower tune up” will turn up tutorials and step-by-step guides for you to follow.

If you don’t consider yourself very handy, take your snow blower to a nearby hardware shop.

3. Upgrade the garage door.

Think about your own behavior for a minute. When you come home from picking the kids up from school, from work, the grocery store, etc. which door are you most likely to enter your house from? For many families, it’s the garage door and if you don’t have a well-sealed garage door, a lot of the cold outside air could be cooling your home.

Not only will replacing your garage door help with energy efficiency, it’s also an investment for your family’s safety. A favorite point-of-entry for many burglars are garage doors, with some being able to gain access to your home, family and valuables within a matter of seconds.

A solution to your energy efficient and safety needs would be investing in a steel garage door. This style of door is long-lasting, durable and insulated with polyurethane, or polystyrene, to keep the cold out and the heat in. Steel garage doors also eliminate the way burglars access your home with traditional roll-up garage doors, which makes it a safe and cost-effective investment for you and your family.
