How to Prevent Water Damage on Your Roof

Every year, homes in the U.S. are impacted by severe storms that can leave residents displaced and homes in shambles. In fact, according to the National Centers for Environmental Information, losses across the U.S. exceeded $1 billion from weather and climate disaster events in 2017. With spring showers just around the corner, take the below precautions to ensure the monsoons outside don’t make their way in.

Shape up your shingles

The shingles on your roof are doing much more than providing your home with a pleasing aesthetic. Shingles provide your home with a barrier from the elements but they can’t do their job effectively if they’re damaged or missing. One way to know if your shingles need repairing is if you notice debris from shingles in, or near, your yard. Another indication would be to look at your roof to see if you notice any clusters of discoloration. If you’ve noticed one, or both, of these indicators, then it’s time to shape up your shingles.

Keep your gutters cleared

Gutters provide a way for water to make its way off your roof. If your gutters are clogged, rainwater will begin to collect on your roof, making leaks much more likely.

Check up on your attic

You remember that place you rarely visit that houses moth balls and old family heirlooms? Well, you should be visiting it pretty regularly. Make it a point to visit the attic once per week, especially after any severe weather, to make sure the ceiling isn’t damaged. Even if you don’t detect a leak, your attic ceiling can give you other signs that there’s been damage done. Mold, stains or discoloration, warped wood, etc. are all implying that you may have a leak on your hands.

If you’ve noticed any of the above signs, prevent your home from enduring more damage by repairing or replacing your existing roof. Or, if you’re still not sure, leave it to a professional! Why replace your roof in the springtime? We’ll give you three good reasons.

Spring is the time to look into replacing your roof. With April showers on their way, you don’t want a leaky roof to catch you by surprise, and the winter storms may have left damage you don’t know about. Plus, spring is perfect for re-roofing projects, and Tri-State has openings. We’ll give you three good reasons you should pencil us in this spring:

Reason 1: Winter left its mark
Winter is hard on everything—the roads, your skin and even your roof. Shingles have supported the burden of snow all season, and ice dams have weighed your roof down while sharp winds found their way underneath loose shingles. It’s probable that winter has damaged your roof in some way, leaving it vulnerable to coming storms.

Reason 2: Spring weather is the best weather
As the Midwest begins to thaw, warmer weather starts moving in. Roofing materials like shingles and adhesives love the moderate temperatures. Plus, while winter snow and ice makes it difficult and dangerous to undergo a roofing project, the freedom from the low temperatures and high winds makes roofing safer for professional teams—and faster. Mild weather means fewer interruptions in our work for quicker project completion.

Reason 3: You’re our first priority
Early on in the year, our less crowded schedule means competitive rates and a better chance of getting your roof finished in the timeframe you’re hoping for. Scheduling a roofing project in the springtime allows you to avoid any complications from backlogged projects. Just be sure you act before the schedule fills up!

Even if you don’t suspect damage, it’s beneficial to have your roof inspected as winter comes to an end. Whether you’re looking for an inspection or go straight for a replacement roof, sign up for a free estimate with Tri-State, and be sure to get on our schedule before it fills up for spring!

Checking Your Roof for Leaks: 4 Common Trouble Spots

GAF, Checking Your Roof for Leaks: 4 Common Trouble Spots

One of the most relaxing ways I enjoy my summer is cozying up in my favorite wooden rocker and listening to the light drum of an evening rain shower against the window pane of my tree house.

Feeling the plop of a rain drop on my furry forehead when my roof got a leak last summer, on the other hand, was not nearly as pleasant of an experience. The next day, I invited the folks at Tri-State Windows, Siding and Roofing over to check the most common trouble spots. These were:

Walls & dormers

Water can seep into walls and dormers just like it can a roof. Stains or cracks in suspected areas are good indicators that there is indeed water leakage coming from that area.

Roof vent & vent boot

Cracked vents, gaskets and missing or loose nails. A thorough inspection on the roof of your home can rule out (or in) these areas as the culprit.

Step flashing

Step flashing is the covering between a vertical surface and the sloping surface roof plane, like you find at the bottom of a chimney. Un-nailed step flashing can lead to leaks in your home.

Holes

During roof construction, mounting holes are created to support equipment. If they are not closed properly, they serve as an easy inlet for water into your home.

I was lucky – my problem was as simple as a loose nail. But other times, a leak can be much trickier to track down. That’s why I was glad to have the folks at Tri-State to help me out before it became a big problem.

Even the smallest leak can cause severe rotting and mold to other parts of your home – making the damage and subsequent repairs much worse than they would have been initially.
